Google creates ultimate reference source for web developers…

Google Doctype has now been released.  It’s kind of a like a Wiki of all things web development that you can add to using your Google account.

It includes such gems as CSS colors which will let you know:

  • the keyword
  • the hex value
  • which browser supports it
  • related documents or sites

There is also a lot of tips & tricks as well as DOM manipulation and everything in between.

Worth bookmarking and tootling around in.

Browser sniffing - 2008 style…

Aaron Gustafson has written a post for A List Apart called Beyond DOCTYPE: Web Standards, Forward Compatibility, and IE8 which is already courting some negatives in the discuss area.

The upshot is that IE7 “broke” some websites that were fine in IE6 all because of the DOCTYPE (mentioned in our podcast) and the practice of DOCTYPE switching.

Aaron has worked with team IE and they have come up with a method of using a <meta> tag to target the rendering engine that the upcoming IE8 should use.

My initial knee-jerk reaction is WTF! But now the Chai is kicking in I’ll make a point of going back and re-reading.

Go read the post for yourself and the comments. Then read Eric Meyer’s article, From Switches to Targets.

I’m not convinced this isn’t a baby step backwards but we’ll see.

Internet Explorer 8 and Acid2: A Milestone

See that?

Look closer - that’s light at the end of the tunnel.  I was just pointed (thx Brad) to the IEBlog where news of IE8 passing the Acid 2 was announced.

Let the celebrating begin - bye bye IE6 (hopefully).

Andy Clarke’s rallying cry for CSS…

Andy Clarke has a great post about the future of CSS. You should read it, think about it, comment on it and then see where we all end up in 2008. As I’ve said before, it’s going to be an interesting year.

UPDATE:

So not two hours after I read Mr. Clarke’s post and wrote about it above, I saw (thank you Snitter) that Mr. Meyer has crafted a post in response. I left my own comment on Andy’s blog and as I said, as an industry we can and should have more of a say in these things. I also agree that the Opera lawsuit against Microsoft is a year too late.

Mobile Web Design has arrived…

Mobile Web Design, the book, that is.

I’ve been waiting for this to be published for some time.  I was lucky enough to “attend” (at the godforsaken hour of 6am) a webinar on mobile design that the W3C hosted which had Cameron speaking on this very subject.  He does a great job presenting facts and the PDF is laid out well with lots of photos and examples.

I haven’t read it yet, so don’t consider this a formal review, but if you are interested in mobile web design with standards in mind, check it out.
