Cleveland meet microformats…

Building on Chris’s earlier post I’ve now posted the video I took of Eric’s talk on Viddler.

I apologise for the jumps - this was the first attempt to record onto a laptop using my camera. I’ve also added some photos to my Flickr account too.

It was a great turnout and it is very encouraging to see so many developers and designers, of varying backgrounds, coming together and getting behind this group.

Review: The Cleveland Web Standards Meetup

Definitely Worth your Time

Sep 12, 2007 by Chris Miller
Web Standards Meetup

★★★★☆

The Web Standards Meetup last night was excellent. It truly was.

I don’t say this lightly. I’ve been to some of the other professional organizations around town. I was less than impressed. The gatherings I’ve been to have either been a bunch of marketers sitting around trading buzzwords, or some large computer firm showing of their newest beta software that doesn’t work properly in the demo.

This was completely different. To start with, Eric Meyer did a presentation on microformats. That alone was worth the trip. I’m not ashamed to say that when David first tried to explain microformats to me, it seemed to me to be some sort of pain-in-the-ass hack that no one was using. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I can definitely see a use for these now, and the presentation gave me some great ideas for some of the sites I’m working on.

So…I learned something useful. Bonus. That’s what I was looking for.

Meeting the folks who attended, though, was the real treat. Holy binary, Batman…there’s a professional group in town that actually sits and discusses code in a way that is interesting and informative! Folks were coming from all sorts of backgrounds…designers, developers, running the gamut from .NET to COBOL. It was fantastic to finally find some people in town discussing the things that I consider important. Standards, Open Source Licensing, professional ethics…I only wish I could have stayed a little longer.

Bravo, guys. You won me over. I’ll be back for the next one. Count on it.

Web Standards Meetup Tonight

David and I are heading to the Cleveland Web Standards Meetup this evening. Personally, I’m looking forward to it. I’ll be the first to admit that I need to brush up on the current standards, and I’m genuinely curious about what we’ll cover tonight.

Hope to see you there!

Developer != Editorializing

We’ve all felt the need to editorialize from time to time in our comments. It can be cathartic to be a smartass when documenting, or name variables in such a way that shows our displeasure with a task. It’s tempting, sometimes, to put something where you think the client or public will never see it. Be warned: it can rebound on you, making you look unprofessional, and, well…like something of a dork to boot.

A good example of this is what just happened in Cool Cleveland. They recently printed an a letter from one of their readers who was offering some thoughtful criticism of the site.

Note, however, the anchor on the link:

That’s enough to get you fired some circles. Learn from this mistake, and be professional.

Eric Meyer calls "Enough”!

Eric Meyer’s post, The Veteran’s Charge, is a good reminder to call foul if you ever think about putting “best viewed in…” or any version of that on your site.

I know the iPhone is a shiny new toy to some, but to develop sites specifically for it is insanity - especially as one of its selling points is iPhone lets you see web pages the way they were designed to be seen!
