What are you passionate about?

Refresh Cleveland is a group devoted to members of the Northeast Ohio community that are passionate about technology and the web. Some people have asked what they should write about on this site. Here’s a topic to start y’all off: what are you passionate about? What aspect of the web, and technology as a whole, interests you and drives you to learn more?

For me, it’s the idea of communication and the constant learning process that is an integral part of technology. I’m a designer–I sometimes jokingly say that I “make things look pretty,” but for me it’s about more than just creating designs that are pleasing to the eye. It’s about communicating visually and allowing the visual aspects of a design to help others understand an idea.

It’s also about mastering a craft, which is tricky and frustrating, but also rewarding. Every time I “get” a new concept, I feel a sense of triumph. Even so I know that I’m never finished learning, because the face of the web is constantly changing. It morphs into something new every month and every year.

Working with the web is a constant adventure. It involves discovery, mastery and the occasional conquest. It may not be mountain climbing, but it can be just as exhilarating when you finally figure out a concept that’s been itching at that little corner of your brain just beyond comprehension. That’s what drives me and makes me continue in this field.

What drives you?

As a designer/developer new in the field, I’m driven to learn new technology and techniques to help my clients succeed. Starting with fresh eyes, I have to learn how to talk to clients and keep them from altering my designs while I try to convince them of the benefits of new technology without much experience behind myself.

So far I’ve learned much in search engine optimization, xhtml and css development, podcasting, vidcasting and other ways of integrating xml to help prioritize and organize information on the web. I’m interested in how others have integrated the technology that drives them into the sites they have worked on.

I’m passionate about so many things… web development is but one part of it! :)

I do this because I love it. I can well remember the first time I saw the web - I was enthralled. And all these years later, I still am.

I have a thirst for knowledge - and keeping up with the web keeps me busy in that area (as you said - ever changing technology means a constant learning process). As well, the sense of satisfaction in completing a project is always a bit of a rush. I get a kick out of seeing people’s eyes light up when they see their idea come to life on the Internet. (Not to mention seeing my own ideas come to fruition.)

And last, but not least, I have a passion for standards. The perfectionist in me really likes to see things validate and work the way they’re suppose to. (Even though that’s not always possible.)
